Hi I'm Lottie, Helens daughter and I'm currently on work experience week and am taking over the blog to talk a little bit about my experiences with the child bereavement charity Winston's Wish.

Me and my Dad

When we lost my Dad in 2009 it was difficult for my mum to understand how to deal with my grief, being only 3 & a half, I wasn't fully aware of the situation we were in. Through Winston's Wish she was able to find resources and help regarding how to support me through my grief as a young child growing up bereaved.

 A bit about Winston's Wish

Winston’s Wish are the UK’s first childhood bereavement charity who have been supporting grieving children and young people since 1992. They continue to lead the way in providing specialist child bereavement support services across the UK. The charity provides emotional and practical bereavement support to children, young people (up to 25) and those who care for them. Expert teams offer one off and ongoing bereavement support along with online resources, specialist publications and training for professionals.

How Disko Kids support Winston's Wish

As a company we donate part of the proceeds from every order of our Milestone Years t-shirts (last year being 1973 and 1983 and this year 1974 and 1984) and sweatshirts to Winston's Wish. Last year we were able to donate a total of £15,225 with an extra donation supporting the Christmas Disco sales of £10,000.

Q&A with Ange at Winston's Wish

I have was able to ask some questions to our contact to at Winston's Wish Ange  who was able to tell us a little bit more about her role at the charity and what they do for bereaved young people

How long has Winston's Wish been going?

We celebrated our 30th year in 2022 so 32 years this year!

What age groups do you support?

We support children and young people up to the age of 25.

Tell us a bit about your role at Winston's Wish

My role is within the corporate fundraising team and I look after businesses who have chosen to support Winston’s Wish. I am a point of contact for our wonderful corporate supporters who hold bakes sales, take on physical challenges, arrange quiz nights and donate through sales of their products. I help identify and come up with lots of other exciting events and campaigns for businesses to get involved in which raise funds for the charity, help us raise awareness and support them and their employees. All of our corporate partners are unique and this makes my role varied and not one project is the same.

How many Children do you help each year on average?

Last year we supported 62,464 children and young people.

How big is the team at Winston's Wish?

We have a team of 12 on our fundraising team who are in different locations in the UK

Thanks so much to Ange for giving an insight on how the charity has developed and helped so many.

I hope this has been useful for anyone in search of support and guidance through bereavement, or just made you aware of what an incredible charity is doing to help young people through tough times.
